HS2 Begins Work On ‘Green Tunnel’

Home / News / HS2 Begins Work On ‘Green Tunnel’

HS2 has revealed the first of its ‘green tunnels’ will be complete in 2024, with construction now having started.

Work has begun on building the one-and-a-half mile ‘green tunnel’ at Chipping Warden in Northamptonshire, with this tunnel differing from others, as it will be covered by earth and greenery to blend in better with the countryside.

This is designed to limit the impact to local communities by making sure the landscape is not tarnished by the high-speed trains between London, Birmingham and the north.

Rohan Perin, HS2 Ltd’s project client, said: “The Chipping Warden green tunnel is a great example of what we’re doing to reduce disruption for people living close to the railway – and it’s fantastic to see the first arches in position.”

In addition to being covered by trees, shrubs and hedgerows, the tunnels are being constructed off-site. More than 5,000 giant concrete tunnel segments are being made in a Derbyshire factory and will simply be assembled on site.

Mr Perin stated that off-site manufacturing will reduce the overall amount of carbon-intensive concrete and steel in the tunnel. Therefore, the process will be quicker and more efficient, cutting down on the carbon required for building.

In fact, the lighter-weight structure will reduce the amount of carbon emissions by more than half.

This will help HS2 achieve its target of being net zero carbon from 2035, despite carrying more than 300,000 passengers a day once fully operational.
