HS2 Builds 853 Metre Logistics Tunnel Underneath London

Home / News / HS2 Builds 853 Metre Logistics Tunnel Underneath London

HS2 has begun work on a long logistics tunnel under London, which will be used to deliver construction materials.

A 847-tonne Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) will be used to create the 853-metre tunnel leading to the Old Oak Common Station site.

As well as bringing materials for the Euston Running Tunnel, it will remove spoil from the building work.

Malcolm Codling, project client for the London Tunnels from HS2, said: “The logistics tunnel allows us to take 70,000 lorry journeys off the local roads that would otherwise have been required and will reduce the impact of HS2’s construction on the local community.”

The Atlas Road Logistics Tunnel is expected to be finished in six months, and will be used to bring 8,010 tunnel segment rings that will be used to build the Euston tunnel.

There will also be a conveyor system in place through the 6.2-metre diameter logistics tunnel. This will link to an existing conveyor belt already situated at Atlas Road, and will remove London clay that is being extracted when constructing the Euston tunnel that will connect with the HS2 London Logistics Hub.

This waste can then be transported to sites in Kent, Rugby and Cambridgeshire where it can be reused.

Once operational, the Euston tunnel will carry passengers between Old Oak Station and London Euston Station. It is expected to run 50 m below ground and be 4.5 miles long.
