Video Technology Helps To Maintain Railway Tracks

Home / News / Video Technology Helps To Maintain Railway Tracks

Network Rail has revealed it is keeping Britain’s railway tracks well-maintained by using machine learning technology.

Automated Intelligent Video Review (AIVR) is able to capture video of the tracks through a small device that is mounted to the front of trains. This footage can be accessed instantly so operators can monitor the condition of the railway tracks, bridges, tunnels, and viaducts.

Other information, such as hazards, vegetation, and location data, is also captured with the technology.

AIVR, which was developed by tech company One Big Circle, also uses computer algorithms to determine patterns to help predict what will happen in the future.

A spokesperson for National Rail said: “Gathering this information via video means we can capture lots of vital and useful knowledge about the state of our infrastructure, easily and smartly.”

Using this technology means Network Rail workers do not have to go on to the track as often, which can be dangerous. In addition to this, it makes maintaining, developing, and repairing the railway infrastructure more efficient.

One Big Circle explains: “Being able to access current data which gives a snapshot of an event in real-time is incredibly valuable in safety-critical industries like rail.”

Network Rail recently revealed work has begun on the next phase of electrification of the Midland Main Line from London to Leicestershire.

Most of the work will take place over night to reduce disruption to commuters, as well as increase the safety for railway workers. It will carry on throughout 2023.
