Most Impressive Tunnels In History

Home / News / Most Impressive Tunnels In History

Tunnels are used for many things and have been around since the beginning of time. From Ancient Greece to Babylon, tunnels have been utilized for travel, protection and transportation for centuries.

Construction has come a long way since ancient times, the tunnels we build now are far more complex, structurally sound and impressive than ever before.

More tunnels are being built every day, they go through mountains, under the sea and are even built under our very feet, transporting millions of commuters in underground railway and subway systems through our busiest cities.

There are some very impressive tunnels in the world:

-The Channel Tunnel between England and France travels under the sea and has the world’s longest undersea section of 23.5 miles long. This impressive marvel of construction allows people to drive across the ocean, or rather under it, and sits at 31 miles long in total.

-The Eisenhower Tunnel located in Colorado is one of the highest tunnels in the entire world. It sits at over 11,000 feet above sea level and is the highest point of the US interstate highway.

-The Seikan Tunnel in Japan sits 460 feet below sea level and is one of the longest and deepest railway tunnels in the world. It is 32.9 miles long and took 24 years to build.

-The Gotthard Base Tunnel in Switzerland reaches depths of 7,545 feet under water. It is the deepest tunnel ever built. Work began in November 1999 and the tunnel was finally opened in June 2016, over 15 years in the making.

-The Spiralen Tunnel in Norway is made up of six dramatic spirals that lead to a dramatic view of Drammen Valley. The tunnel covers over 1,500 meters.

With so many exciting, incredible tunnels in the world, it is hard to imagine what else could be created. We can only imagine that even more incredible tunnel projects will arise in the future.
