What Is Tungsten And Why Is It So Useful In Making Tunnels?

Home / News / What Is Tungsten And Why Is It So Useful In Making Tunnels?

Tungsten is one of the most underrated metals, despite having a super high melting point, low vapour pressure, and being extremely resistant to corrosion.

The white-greyish metal, which is solid at room temperature,  has the lowest vapour pressure of all metals.

It also has the highest tensile strength at temperatures of more than 1650C, and can only corrode when in contact with mineral acids.

Tungsten’s density is comparable with uranium and gold at 19.3g/cc, which together with its other properties makes it one of the most valuable of all metals.

According to Midwest Tungsten Service, there are many uses of tungsten, ranging from X-ray targets, heating elements for electrical furnaces, missiles, fluorescent lighting, and TV electron tubes.

It is also popular in the metal-working, mining, petroleum, chemical, tanning, and high-temperature industries.

This is why tungsten – specifically tungsten carbide – is used frequently in tunnel boring machines.

The reason behind this is tungsten is resistant to corrosion, while its durability means it will not deteriorate under high pressure.

As it has become so useful since its discovery in the 18th Century by English chemist Peter Woulfe, it is essential it is maintained adequately.

Tungsten cleaners are necessary when using the metal to avoid excessive wear and tear, especially when applied to conveyor belts for use in tunnel boring.

Used appropriately, they enable the parts of machinery to work effectively and efficiently, reducing delays in the operation. This can also potentially save a considerable amount of money.

Therefore, ensuring the parts made out of tungsten are regularly and professionally cleaned could be worth the investment, as it will speed up operations and improve the likelihood of meeting deadlines.

In addition to tungsten cleaner, it is important to use other equipment to keep conveyor belts running smoothly. These include conveyor accessories, rotary brushes, and raptor poly head cleaners.
