4 Conveyor Belt Safety Tips

Home / News / 4 Conveyor Belt Safety Tips

Workplace health and safety should always be at the forefront of everyone’s minds when working in at-risk situations and environments, and while using potentially dangerous equipment, such as conveyor belts.

As such, proper training should always be provided for staff members using such equipment so as to ensure that they don’t pose a risk to themselves or others in the near vicinity.

To help you make sure you’re meeting all your obligations where conveyor belt operation is concerned, here are some of our top tips to ensure compliance with regards to regulations and employee health and safety.

Keep up to date with policies & procedures

Health and safety laws change and evolve over time, so it’s essential that you and your team are up to date with all the latest regulations, so you know you’re working in the safest way possible and in line with the rules.

Provide access to appropriate PPE

The appropriate PPE must be provided and worn for the task at hand. Long hair should be tied back and any jewellery or loose clothing be kept away from the conveyor belt at all times. PPE could include ear defenders, gloves and safety goggles.

Carry out regular visual checks

The working landscape changes all the time, so it’s important to carry out visual checks of the environment regularly so you can make any health and safety-related alterations accordingly. Also listen to the conveyor belt itself and look out for any changes here, so you can react if you find something untoward.

Familiarise yourself with nip points

Nip points are the pinch point that occurs when the rotating drum/roller comes into contact with the moving conveyor belt on the in-running side. These can be very dangerous, so it’s important to know where these take place so you can make the necessary adjustments as and when required.
